Ethan Ampadu tribunal leaves Exeter ‘disappointed’

Exeter City have said they are disappointed with the outcome of the tribunal regarding the move of Ethan Ampadu to Chelsea, as reported by the BBC.

The tribunal ordered Chelsea to pay Exeter a compensation fee of £2.5million for the 17-year-old, but Exeter feel that wasn’t enough.

The Welsh defender moved to Stamford Bridge last year but came through the academy at Exeter and chairman Julian Tagg thought it wasn’t a fair deal when considering the club’s work with the player:

We are disappointed for our fans, our academy, which works so hard on producing talented young players like Ethan.

Ampadu has appeared seven times for the Blues this season and made his Premier League debut in December, coming off the bench against Huddersfield Town.

Exeter will be due add ons in the future plus a 20% fee in any sale for the youngster, but Tagg thought it sent out the wrong message to lower league clubs:

This decision sends the wrong message in terms of financial reward for those owners, chairmen, managers and coaches up and down the country who are also working as hard as us to improve their clubs by producing talented home-grown players for both club and country.
