Every day, there is some news or another about Chelsea being interested in a new player. Obviously, that is somewhat understandable. The Blues are a team that need to improve massively after their recent failures. They finished 10th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the third time in four attempts since the BlueCo takeover.
Xabi Alonso is arriving as the new manager. The club have made sure that the term is underlined. He is not merely the head coach, as his predecessors had been.
That means that he is going to have more of a say when it comes to transfers. And Chelsea fans will be hoping that some proven quality and experience is brought into the team rather than continuing to sign youngsters and wonderkids. If the transfer policy does not change, there is little chance much else will, despite the arrival of Alonso.
So, hopes were raised when news broke in Italy that an offer had been made for Mile Svilar of AS Roma. While it had been apparently turned down, there was a chance that the Blues could try again. Unfortunately, it looks like it was off the mark to begin with.
Chelsea transfer rumour was not accurate
According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Alfredo Pedulla said about the rumour regarding Chelsea’s €50 million bid to sign Svilar:
As for Svilar, I’ve been told there hasn’t even been a €50 million offer from Chelsea.
So, it looks like a move for Svilar is not on the cards for Chelsea. That is unfortunate as he is one of the best in Serie A right now.
There are many who believe that Chelsea need to strengthen between the posts if they want to compete for the biggest trophies. But on the other hand, there are those who see a different path forward as well.
Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation is not straightforward
Robert Sanchez is the current number one between the posts for Chelsea. That is expected to remain the case next season as well.
Also, it is expected that the backup option, Filip Jorgensen, wants to leave this summer. And the club won’t stand in his way.
So, why not make a move for another goalkeeper? Well, it looks like the answer is simple. Mike Penders’ potential.
Penders has long been viewed as someone who has world-class potential. So, if Chelsea sign someone like Svilar right now, that could lead to him wanting to leave. There is a chance he could be in the first-team fold from next season already.
Initially, he is likely to start off as the backup option. But one would imagine that the long-term view would be for him to take over the first-team gloves from Sanchez, if or when he is ready.
