The left-back situation at Chelsea could get interesting this summer. Marc Cucurella seems to be looking to engineer a move away. He joined the club in 2022 and has been here throughout BlueCo’s run. It has been a major disappointment to the supporters. One would imagine players feel the same way. So, it is understandable if a few of them want to leave.
Cucurella has been one of Chelsea’s best performers for the last few seasons. He is also considered one of the best left-backs on the planet. So, if the club do part ways with him, they will need to find a replacement as well.
One player who has been linked with Chelsea as a potential replacement for Cucurella is Nathaniel Brown. But it looks like Bayern Munich have moved ahead in the race to sign him.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich and Brown have reached a full verbal agreement on a summer transfer. The 22-year-old German left-back from Eintracht Frankfurt wants to join the Bavarian club with immediate effect after very positive talks with Vincent Kompany. A long-term contract until 2031 has already been agreed.
Bayern Munich agree deal with left-back Chelsea wanted as Cucurella’s replacement
So, it looks like Bayern Munich are not going to have an issue when it comes to personal terms with Brown. But that does not mean that a move is over the line.
As reported by Plettenberg, Bayern Munich and SGE are already in contact. Markus Krosche is demanding up to €60 million. The deal could still fail over the transfer fee.
So, it remains to be seen how things play out from here. Of course, that €60 million transfer fee could prove to be steep for Chelsea as well.
It would be a risky move to make for a 22-year-old left-back who has spent his entire career in German football so far. Brown has not proven himself in the Premier League.
A €60 million move for Brown would be risky
We have seen plenty of players shine in the Bundesliga but then fail to make the adjustment to the Premier League. Chelsea fans will understand that better than most.
Names like Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner come to mind immediately. So, Chelsea should be wary before making that kind of investment on trying to sign a player from the Bundesliga.
Personally, if Chelsea are going to pay a transfer fee in that region for the left-back position, I would like to see Lewis Hall being brought back. He has the potential to be the best in the world in his role and would fit Xabi Alonso’s system, thanks to his traits.
As for Cucurella, it is not certain that he will leave Chelsea. The Blues are expected to look for a transfer fee in the region of £60 million, something the likes of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona might struggle to pay.
