Sarri urges Chelsea fans to get behind players

Maurizio Sarri has urged the Chelsea supporters not to turn on his players on Wednesday night.

The Blues host Tottenham in a crucial Premier League clash, in what has become one of the country’s more intense rivalries.

Sarri is well aware that a defeat at Stamford Bridge is likely to spell the end of his time as Chelsea manager.

Fans have been vocal in their criticism of him lately, despite some siding with him after Sunday’s Carabao Cup final controversy with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the game, Sarri pleaded with the supporters to stay positive with his players, if not with him:

I was disappointed for my players. Only for my players.

But I think I can understand the fans, of course. I can understand, because they are used to winning.

Now we have a difficult moment, but I’d like to see more support for my players, not for me.

It is a vital game both sides, with Chelsea desperately trying to hunt down Arsenal and Manchester United, and Spurs still retaining faint hopes of winning the title.

Victory is essential for Sarri, whose job appears to be on the line in every match he takes charge of.

matchday.
