It has been quite some time since Chelsea went out and signed one of the best players on the planet. That could be about to change soon. At least, if reports are on the mark, the Blues will have a chance to do that.
One of the most fascinating rises that we have witnessed in football in recent times is that of Ousmane Dembele. The Frenchman flopped at Barcelona and the general view was that he would never meet his potential.
A few years after leaving Barcelona and joining Paris Saint-Germain, and one could argue that Dembele has far exceeded those same expectations. He was central to their maiden Champions League triumph and won the Ballon d’Or as a result of his efforts, something not even his biggest supporters would have predicted even at the start of last season.
Anyways, there seems to be trouble in paradise already. That could open up the door for Chelsea to make their move for the reigning Ballon d’Or holder.
Chelsea reportedly have the chance to sign Ousmane Dembele from PSG
According to Fichajes, Dembele’s entourage has formally contacted the Chelsea board. Despite having a contract with PSG until mid-2028, negotiations for an extension have definitively stalled. On top of that, the relationship with Luis Enrique has reached a breaking point.
So, it appears that Dembele is eyeing a potential move away from PSG. It is worth mentioning that Chelsea were a potential destination for him right before he joined the French giants.
Of course, there was the Thomas Tuchel factor back then. The two had worked together at Borussia Dortmund. That is not present at Chelsea any longer. But Liam Rosenior will know well what Dembele is capable of from his time managing in France.
Could Chelsea sign Dembele if he leaves PSG?
To be brutally honest, it is hard to imagine Chelsea making a move for Dembele, even if he becomes available for a move. If PSG are unable to agree an extension with the French winger, it is very likely that the Blues won’t be willing to meet his contract demands either.
Dembele is the Ballon d’Or winner. It is understandable if he is seeking one of the most lucrative contracts in the game. Just think of the modern-day greats who have been unable to achieve what he just did. Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Eden Hazard, the list goes on.
