In recent times, we have seen quite a few times when Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have had the same transfer targets. Mohammed Kudus was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge more than once before joining Spurs. The Blues had even agreed a contract with Xavi Simons. Now, it looks like one of their current crop of players is on the radar.
Chelsea have fully focused on signing youngsters under the Clearlake-Boehly ownership. It has come with disappointing results. But it does not seem like the club management has any interest in changing their transfer model.
The latest player to be linked with a move to Chelsea is a 20-year-old Tottenham Hotspur first-team regular. We are talking about none other than Lucas Bergvall.
According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Simon Phillips has shared on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that one of his sources has claimed that Chelsea made a contract proposal to Bergvall. However, Tottenham Hotspur made it clear to the Blues that they were not prepared to part ways with the Swedish international midfielder.
Chelsea reportedly made contract offer to Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall
Bergvall might be just 20 years old, but he has already been a regular fixture in the Tottenham Hotspur midfield. The Swede has been given consistent starts, as well as opportunities off the bench since joining the club in the summer of 2024.
He mostly plays in the centre of midfield. But the Swedish international is capable of playing further up or deeper in the middle of the park. In 71 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham Hotspur so far, he has scored two goals and provided eight assists.
Chelsea’s interest in a rising Premier League midfielder should not come as any surprise considering the club’s transfer model, which sometimes seems to precede even their chances of success. It does not look like Tottenham Hotspur are interested in sanctioning a move though.
Would Bergvall be a good signing for Chelsea?
Chelsea’s rumoured interest in Bergvall might be a suggestion that they are ready to move on from Romeo Lavia. The Belgian midfielder has been constantly injured since joining the club in 2023. He has played 30 times in total in two-and-a-half seasons.
There is no doubt about Bergvall’s talents. That being said, one cannot overlook the fact that he has played most of his football in a struggling Tottenham team. They finished 17th last season. Right now, they sit at 16th, just five points above the relegation zone.
Is Bergvall capable of being a constant part of a winning team? That will be the expectation for him if he joins Chelsea.
