This week, we have spoken to Read Southampton’s editor, Dan Emery to discuss this week’s match, how the Saints have started their season and how he thinks the game will finish.
Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the last month, you’ll know Chelsea have had a bad start to the season. Is this the perfect time to play them?
Yes, they have had a bad start. However, there are still plenty of match-winners in that squad and they are bound to hit a run of form soon. Who’s to say it won’t start this week? Despite their bad start, it will always be a tough game versus Chelsea.
How have Southampton started the season?
It’s been a tough start. Being kicked out of the Europa League early didn’t help team morale and all the summer changes in the playing staff made for a lot of disruption in the camp. However, it has been much improved in the last month, 3 wins out of 5 and some very promising performances. There is still much more to come from the Saints this season.

Who will be the key man for the Saints on Saturday?
Due to Chelsea’s attacking prowess, I think that Virgil Van Dijk will be key for Southampton. He has been fantastic since signing and already has two man of the match performances so far (from my own personal opinion). He will have a lot to do versus Chelsea’s talented forwards and I think he will excel.
How have Southampton managed after having yet more players leave over the summer?
Like I alluded to in the second question, it has been difficult. Losing two key players in Schneiderlin and Clyne has been tough. However, there have been some very promising signings, such as Cedric and Van Dijk. Jordy Clasie is also still to come into the team and he could be yet another fantastic addition by Koeman, who, yet again, has handled the summer window fantastically well.

How do you see the game going on Saturday?
I am fairly optimistic giving previous encounters and Chelsea’s current form, however, I have to be realistic and I would be delighted with a draw. I can see Chelsea pushing hard at Southampton, with the Saints looking to hit on the counter with the pace of Sadio Mane.
What Southampton players do you think could get into the current Chelsea side?
Very tough question that. Victor Wanyama and Virgil Van Dijk I would have to say. Chelsea’s midfield hasn’t looked as solid as it did last season and Wanyama and Matic would make for a formidable defensive midfield. Gary Cahill and Virgil Van Dijk would also be a good partnership, as it is well documented how Chelsea tried to sign a top quality centre-back in the summer, which I believe Van Dijk is.

Can we get your score predictions and goalscorers predictions?
As I said, I’m being optimistic but realistic. I am going for a 2-2 draw. Saints scorers: Pelle (2) and Chelsea scorers: Hazard and Remy.
