The 4-1 win over Aston Villa, thanks to Joao Pedro’s hat-trick and a goal from Cole Palmer, has breathed new life into Chelsea’s campaign. Not only did they get a tough away win, but they also defeated a rival in the Champions League qualification race. To make things even better, Manchester United lost to Newcastle and Liverpool lost to Wolves. The results could not have been any better for Liam Rosenior’s side.
This could prove to be a turning point and help them get past the finish line in the race to qualify for the Champions League. In the long run, they still need to improve significantly, if they want to compete at the top.
There are several areas where they need to improve. Midfield might be one of them. Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo have been two of their best performers. Rosenior clearly is a fan of Andrey Santos as well. But Romeo Lavia’s situation has been a concern for a long time now.
Lavia has recently returned to fitness. He has come off the bench against Arsenal and Aston Villa. But overall, he has played just nine times this season. Over the last three seasons, he has made a total 32 appearances for Chelsea. If the Belgian picks up another injury, it might be time for the Blues to give up and move on.
Chelsea planning talks to sign Bayern Munich defensive midfielder
Curiously, Chelsea are now being linked with a move for a Bayern Munich defensive midfielder. But signing him might not be a straightforward task.
According to Mark Brus on CaughtOffside, Chelsea are expected to open discussions with Bayern Munich directly in the coming weeks over Aleksandar Pavlovic. Any negotiations are unlikely to lead to a breakthrough given the player’s stance and the Bundesliga champions’ position.
Pavlovic does not seem keen on leaving Bayern Munich
Considering Chelsea’s transfer strategy, it is not hard to understand why signing Pavlovic would interest them. He is 21 years of age and already a regular starter for Bayern Munich. He has also appeared on nine occasions for the Germany national team.
Signing Pavlovic would fit Chelsea’s transfer model perfectly. The issue is, it does not feel like a move away from Allianz Arena is being considered by either the player or his club.
Pavlovic’s priority remains to stay with Bayern Munich. On the other hand, the Bavarian giants seem determined to keep him as part of their long-term project. So, an exit seems unlikely.
