It has become very clear this season that Chelsea are not good enough to compete for the top prizes in England and in Europe. The likes of Arsenal and Manchester City were always ahead of them. Now, it looks like Aston Villa, Manchester United and Liverpool are opening up a gap as well.
That was not the expectation coming into the season. Chelsea won the Club World Cup in the summer, and with a convincing win over PSG. The belief was that their young squad would take the next step and finally establish themselves as contenders. Unfortunately, that has not happened.
Their inconsistency, lack of discipline and inability to deal with physical teams have cost them time and again. It is starting to look likely that they will miss out on Champions League qualification again. Four years into the BlueCo project, that would not make for good reading.
The need for experience and proven quality is evident. Will the owners finally tweak their transfer strategy and go after some big names next summer?
Chelsea have reportedly made offer for Real Madrid’s two-time Champions League winner
Chelsea have been linked with quite a few Real Madrid players in recent months. And if reports coming out of Spain are accurate then they have put in an offer.
According to Fichajes, Real Madrid have received a formal offer of €70 million for Rodrygo, a figure that compels the club’s management to sit down and analyse the situation calmly. The offer, structured as a fixed €60 million plus €10 million in add-ons, comes from Chelsea.
Could Rodrygo join Chelsea next summer?
Rodrygo is going through one of his worst periods as a Real Madrid player. His importance to the team has decreased since Kylian Mbappe joined. But last season, he still got decent playing time under Carlo Ancelotti.
This season, that has changed with Ancelotti leaving. Rodrygo was not a nailed-on starter under Xabi Alonso. And under Alvaro Arbeloa, he is yet to start a game.
Of course, Rodrygo has been dealing with fitness issues lately. So, he has not really had a chance to show what he is capable of under Arbeloa. But all things considered, things are not ideal for him at Real Madrid.
Rodrygo’s contract at Real Madrid runs out in the summer of 2028 as well. So, if a generous offer comes in, one would expect Los Blancos to consider it. On the other hand, with game time limited, the Brazilian might not be keen on extending his deal at this moment, until there is some clarity on his place in the pecking order.
