Chelsea to revisit Edson Alvarez signing

Reports have emerged speculating that Chelsea will explore once again the possibility of bringing Edson Alvarez to the club in January.

It surfaced last week that the Blues had launched a €50m (£43m) bid for the Ajax midfielder and that the Mexican international refused to train with the club in an attempt to try and force through a transfer as Thomas Tuchel sought deadline day reinforcements in the engine room.

However, no deal transpired and the club ultimately swooped to bring Swiss midfielder Denis Zakaria to the club on a season-long loan from Juventus with the option to buy at the end of the campaign.

However, it appears that the executives at Stamford Bridge aren’t satisfied with the options in midfield and a further addition in that department has been mooted.

According to the Evening Standard, Todd Boehly is prepared to invest further in the team come January with the club targeting a midfielder as their priority.

It came to light following the transfer deadline that Chelsea had a £50m verbal offer rejected by Southampton for Romeo Lavia but the Standard claim that Alvarez is thought to be the preferred target when the window reopens.

Given the fact that both Jorginho and Ngolo Kante see their contracts expire at the end of the season, it is plain to see why Tuchel would want another midfielder.

Alvarez, who will be 25 in October, moved to Amsterdam in 2019 from Mexican side Club America but is under contract until 2025 which gives Ajax firm control when it comes to negotiations.

However, Chelsea may be willing to listen to their demands given his combative style which saw him average two tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Netherlands last season (WhoScored) as well as 1.5 clearances, 2.5 long passes and 3.3 successful aerial duels highlighting the all-round presence he could bring to the middle of the pitch at Cobham.
