CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Chelsea will now look to tie down Mason Mount to an improved contract.
The update arose amid confirmation that the Blues have agreed fresh terms with Reece James.
The defender has put pen to paper on a £250k-per-week deal keeping him at the club for another five years with the option to extend the deal another 12 months and it looks like a fellow Cobham graduate is next in line for a pay-hike.
The only player to provide more than James’ nine Premier League assists last season was Mount who reached ten and Jacobs has taken to Twitter to put across that securing the 23-year-old’s long-term future is something the club are working on.
He posted: ‘Chelsea’s new owners planned to offer improved terms to James even before the sale was complete. Getting him to sign was a priority since day one.
‘Chelsea will also offer Mason Mount a new contract.’
Despite a slow start to the campaign for Mount with no goal contributions in six appearances he has become an established figure in the Chelsea XI playing 166 games for the club scoring 30 goals as well as making 31 assists.
He was voted the fans player of the year as the west Londoners won the Champions League in the 2020/21 campaign and posted a team-high SofaScore average match rating for the season last year (7.43) among players who played more than one Premier League game for the club.
Amid smashing the record for most money spent in a single transfer window at £271.1m, it is clear that Todd Boehly and the club are focused on keeping their prized possessions in place and Mount could join James among the top earners at the club in the not too distant future.
