Chelsea have certainly had an interesting pre-season under Frank Lampard. While some of the attacking football on display has given many a real sense of optimism, matters at the other end of the pitch have brought them back down to earth.
While pre-season rarely reflects what happens on the pitch in competitive fixtures throughout the season, the Blues’ last three friendlies certainly sum up what is expected to be a regular feature in the 2019/20 campaign; goals at both ends of the pitch.
Chelsea have scored 11 in their last three pre-season games against Reading, Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Monchengladbach respectively, but also conceded eight against the same opponents.
Entertaining though it may be, I’m not sure our heart rates can take too many seven or eight goal thrillers throughout the season.
However, with the start of the new Premier League season now just a few days away, we’ve taken a look at who the winners and losers of Chelsea’s pre-season are.
