Inter Milan are interested in bringing Mateo Kovacic to the club at the end of the season, according to Tuttosport, via Calciomercato.
The midfielder has spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Chelsea, but he has largely disappointed throughout.
Despite his obvious technical ability, Kovacic has been accused of lacking substance in his game, scoring no goals and registering just two assists in the Premier League.
The Croatian is still on Real Madrid’s books, but they will not be retaining his services, with a summer exit almost certain.
It is Inter who have emerged as front-runners for his signature, especially if Antonio Conte becomes the Nerazzurri‘s new manager – something that remains up in the air.
Cagliari star Nicolo Barella is another candidate to slot into Inter’s midfield, following an impressive season.
Chelsea will not even be attempting to keep hold of Kovacic, so a permanent move to Stamford Bridge is out of the question.
