Sarri criticises Loftus-Cheek’s tactical awareness

Maurizio Sarri has claimed that Ruben Loftus-Cheek deserved to be dropped from the England squad, claiming the 22-year-old needs to develop his tactical awareness.

Loftus-Cheek made his first Chelsea start under Sarri against MOL Vidi on Thursday evening, but was substituted after 66 minutes.

The Italian boss has now identified where he wants the World Cup sensation to improve.

Quoted in The Telegraph, Sarri said:

I have seen he is a great player from the technical point of view, from the physical point of view,

He has to improve from a tactical point of view. I think he has played a very good match, from the physical point of view and the technical point of view.

I want more, from the tactical point of view, because we conceded three, four counter-attacks to the opponent. We have to do better, especially in these cases, with the mistakes. But I’m sure he will improve.

Spending last season on loan at Crystal Palace, Loftus-Cheek impressed Gareth Southgate enough to warrant a place in the England World Cup squad. Not there to make up numbers, the versatile midfielder played in each of his nation’s group stage matches.

Selected for England’s matches against Spain and Switzerland, Loftus-Cheek has been omitted from the squad for the upcoming fixtures against Croatia and Spain (again).
