Azpilicueta calls on Chelsea to be more creative

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta wants the team to be more creative while in possession.

The Spanish international spoke to the club’s official website following the Blues’ 2-1 win away at Newcastle United on Sunday and highlighted how the team must now strive to improve their creative quality.

Creating more chances from open play is something we will work on, I’m sure. We want to control the game and have the ball, and we want to be dangerous in front of the goal. As a team we know we can improve and we will work on that.

Azpilicueta has enjoyed an involved role in Maurizio Sarri’s new-look Chelsea side, shifting across to his more natural position at right-back, with Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz the preferred centre-back partnership.

Nevertheless, Azpilicueta is flourishing and has played a part in the Blues’ faultless start to the campaign.

I am sure in some games we will have to deal with a defensive opponent, in other games we will have to deal with a different type of game and player, but the Premier League is the best league in the world, and we know you have to fight every game to win points.

Sarri’s men have won three games from three following a comprehensive 3-0 win at Huddersfield and a 3-2 victory over Arsenal before their trip to St James’ Park.

Chelsea have so far had no trouble in scoring goals under Sarri, but Azpilicueta is evidently hoping to see an additional creative edge to the team’s play in the near future.

Whatever it takes we have to work hard to win games.
