Chelsea star Eden Hazard has accepted that he must become more selfish if he is to ever win the Ballon d’Or.
The Belgium international has frequently been tipped as a potential winner of the prestigious annual award, that has been claimed by either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo every year since 2008.
Hazard did manage to pick up the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award by helping the Blues to the Premier League title in 2014/15, but so far he hasn’t come close to the Ballon d’Or.
He hasn’t even made it to the third place spot, which has been held by Neymar and Antoine Griezmann in recent years.
The 27-year old, who scored 12 and assisted four goals this season just gone, believes he will have to alter his mind-set if he is to ever be crowned among the greatest players to play the game. Talking to BBC Sport, when asked about his selfless nature, Hazard said;
[My father] always told me that. Maybe it’s true. I think, in football now, if you want to win something like the Ballon d’Or or [to be the] top-scorer, you need to be selfish. But I’m not like this, not at all. I’m just who I am.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is considered by many to be the next winner of the Ballon d’Or following a stellar debut campaign with the Reds, with many saying that a Champions League final victory could seal the title for him.
