Chelsea 2-0 Everton: Three things learned

Chelsea put their opening day defeat against Burnley firmly behind them with an extremely comfortable 2-0 victory over a lacklustre Everton side to secure their first win of the season at the Bridge.

Alvaro Morata became the first player in Premier League history to both score and assist a goal in his first two home games, assisting Cesc Fabregas for the first goal, and then emphatically heading home from a dangerous Cesar Azpilicueta cross. Both goals game before half time.

Despite a late flurry of chances for Everton, Chelsea dominated the majority of the second half, and were unlucky not to score at least two more before the final whistle.

The win marked Antonio Conte’s sides second of the season, as the Blues continue to gain momentum going into the international break.

We look at what we learned against the Toffees.

No Hazard, no problem?

We witnessed an accomplished display both defensively and offensively today, with Pedro, Morata, and Willian at times linking up exquisitely, creating chance after chance for the Blues.

Eden Hazard featured in the reserves game on Friday evening, playing 75 minutes. However, Roberto Martinez has controversially decided to call the Belgian up for international duty, infuriating Conte. Chelsea did not show any signs of missing him today, controlling the game, and always looking threatening on the attack. Eden Hazard’s return to the side will be an added bonus to the fine form that our forwards are currently showing.

Any way back into the side for Gary Cahill?

Since Gary Cahill’s moment of madness against Burnley, Antonio Rudiger has shown he is up to the task of filling the Englishman’s boots.

After being one of the positive performances to take away from the Burnley defeat, he was one of the central defenders who had a heroic display against Tottenham, and his fine form continued against Everton. The German’s range of passing was to be admired, and the occasional driving run out of defence helped Chelsea forward, creating opportunities.

This begs the question as to whether Antonio Conte will bring back Gary Cahill, or choose to stick with the new signing. It is definitely a selection headache for the manager, but arguably a nice one to have.

International break coming at the wrong time?

With the side gaining momentum and confidence, and the likes of Hzarad and Tiemoue Bakayoko coming back to full fitness, the international break will halt some of the progress made in the last few weeks, and the risk of injury whilst the players compete for their nations could cost Chelsea.

With the current lack of signings contributing to the poor squad depth, it is imperative Chelsea make a few more signings in the next week, to ensure injuries don’t cost them games.
