Willian was very close to joining Manchester United

According to Goal, Chelsea winger, Willian, was very close to joining Manchester United and regroup with Jose Mourinho.

In Mourinho’s final season at Chelsea, Willian was the shining light in a very poor season, winning the club Player of the Year award, but when current Blues boss Antonio Conte joined, the Brazilian failed to clinch a starting place at first.

The winger has now revealed that he was close to joining back with Mourinho at Manchester United as Eden Hazard and Pedro became the main starters on the wings for Chelsea in their title winning season under Conte.

Despite being a third choice winger, Willian still made 41 appearances in all competitions last season, managing to bag 12 goals and assisting five times.

Willian joined Chelsea in 2013 from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala for £30m and becoming an instant fan favourite by rejected their London rivals Tottenham.

Talking on his future, Willian said

There were a few conversations with my agent. I worked with Mourinho and I became his friend as well, he likes me a lot and I like him a lot as a coach and as a person. He has put his trust in me and in my work, and I was very grateful to him.

He went on to say

Manchester came to me, they talked with my agent, but nothing happened, because Chelsea would not negotiate me in any way and I’m very happy at Chelsea.
