Chelsea today confirmed the arrival of German international Antonio Rudiger from AS Roma for a fee believed to be around £35m.
The powerful centre-back joins the club having recently enjoyed a hugely successful campaign with the German national side, who won the Confederations Cup.
Chelsea have been eyeing up defenders in recent times and it looks as though Rudiger was identified as the perfect candidate to solidify Antonio Conte’s already-impressive defensive unit.
So, just why is Rudiger such a good signing? We’ve taken a look at five reasons.

1. Potential
Although Rudiger is already a hugely impressive defender, there is room for improvement. He’s shown his quality on numerous occasions already and at the age of just 24, we’re yet to see the best of him. Chelsea fans will be hoping that he can blossom and live up to his full potential in the Blues’ shirt.
2. Suitability
One aspect of Rudiger’s game that stands out is his natural ability on the ball. Not only is he a gifted physical player, but an outstanding technician. His range of passing and positive use of the ball fits well with Conte’s approach to the game and he’s sure to be a well suited player in the Italian’s plans.

3. Versatility
While it cannot be denied that Rudiger is best utilised in central defence, he is also a more than competent right-back. This will be of use to Conte if ever he opts to revert to a back four, knowing fully well that his defensive talent lies within his squad’s centre-backs.
He also played on the left of a back three for Germany in the Confederations Cup, which is sure to have been an appealing factor for Conte.
4. Upgrade
Rudiger is most certainly an improvement on the current options at the back. Although both enjoyed highly successful seasons last term, I’d argue that the German international is a more accomplished central defender than both Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta. The former is still an impressive player, while the latter is a fantastic full-back. However, Rudiger is a more well-rounded centre-back and a better fit in a back three.

5. Value
Lastly, in a market that currently entails astronomical transfer fees, Chelsea have found themselves a defender that is excellent value for money. Rudiger could have easily been sold for more than the quoted £35m based on his performances last season and the potential he has, but I believe the Blues have found themselves a bargain with this one.
