The former Stoke midfielder had thought to be a target for Premier League duo Manchester City and Chelsea as well Italian side, Juventus but has been impressed by his current team’s performances this season and extended his stay in Spain.
His previous contract contained a £21.5m buy-out clause but it is yet to be disclosed as to whether the new deal includes any such clause.
The 28-year-old joined Sevilla from Stoke in 2015 and has since excelled to become of the world’s highest rated defensive midfielders. His performances this term have helped Sevilla to form an unlikely title push.
Chelsea have lacked midfield depth this season and had been linked with a move with Cesc Fabregas looking like he may leave.
It now appears the Spaniard will remain at Stamford Bridge until at least the summer after rejecting loan moves away from the club.
