David Luiz has been arguably the standout centre-half in the Premier League since his £30 million return to the blues, and Clinton Morrison believes that is because of the new 3-4-3 formation implemented by Antonio Conte.
Since the switch to a back three, the league leaders have gone on a stunning 13 game winning run, conceding only four goals in the process. While the defence has been superb as a unit, Luiz has been the surprise performer.
With the added cover provided by a back three the defensive mistakes that Luiz became so infamous for during his first stint with the blues for have been entirely absent.
Speaking to Sky Sports, as reported by the Daily Star, Morrison lavished praise upon Luiz:
They’ve been brilliant. The back three of David Luiz, Cahill and Azpilicueta.
David Luiz was a great signing. I think if you play him in a back four I think he struggles. But when you play him as the third centre half he can bring the ball out and he reads the games well. The wing-backs have been sensational as well.
Luiz’s ability to start attacks from deep with his exceptional range of passing has never been in doubt. However, this is perhaps the first time in his career that he has been widely lauded for his defensive capabilities.
