Another late Diego Costa goal secured Chelsea all three points at Vicarage Road.
In a lethargic first-half performance, Chelsea failed to create any clear-cut chances. Watford came closest in the opening half, as Nigerian forward Odion Ighalo’s strike from close range was deflected over.
Chelsea persisted with their defensive midfield trio of N’Golo Kante, Nemanja Matic and Oscar, but their lack of attacking intent proved unproductive, so it was no surprise when Etienne Capoue struck home a volley from inside the area to give Watford the lead.
Antonio Conte subsequently brought on Cesc Fabregas, Michy Batshuayi, and Victor Moses – much to the relief of the frustrated Chelsea fans, who were aggravated by Matic’s inability to play in a more advanced role.
The substitutions finally paid dividends when Batshuayi tapped home the equaliser – after Eden Hazard’s shot had been parried, with ten minutes to play. The creative genius of Fabregas eventually won the game for the Blues – with his exquisite through ball releasing Costa, who calmly finished past Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.
This win maintained Chelsea and Conte’s 100% start to the campaign.
