The Belgian departed Stamford Bridge for Everton less than two years ago in a £28 million move, but the Blues will be required to pay almost double this if they wish to resign the powerful frontman according to the Mirror.
The Toffees now have money to spend after investment by new shareholder Farhad Moshiri and plan to use the businessman’s funds to keep their top players at the club.
However, Lukaku has expressed his ambition to step up to the ‘next level’ following an impressive season on Merseyside and with the Goodison Park club sitting 12th in the table, a summer move is looking increasingly likely.
In response to his comments, a number of Europe’s top clubs are said to be circling the former Anderlecht man including PSG and Bayern Munich which will make it difficult for Chelsea to lure Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.
In addition to this, the 22-year-old may be unwilling to return to the club where he made just 10 appearances during a three-year spell which included two loans away and a rumoured falling out with ex-manager Jose Mourinho.
Another stumbling block in the transfer could be the West Londoners lack of Champions League football which Lukaku has reiterated his desire for.
So despite his excellent form this year, it is unlikely that fans will see the Belgian back in a Chelsea shirt next season with the Blues needing to look elsewhere for a new striker.
