Didier Drogba to retire and join Chelsea as a coach

The French newspaper L’Equipe have sensationally claimed that Didier Drogba has retired from professional football and will link up with Guus Hiddink as part of the Chelsea staff.

The Chelsea legend had been plying his trade in the MLS for the Montreal Impact and scored an incredible 11 goals in 11 games for the club.

However, his stint at the Canadian outfit appears to have come to a close as the Ivorian returns to Stamford Bridge.

Hiddink has spoken on many occasions on wishing to add Drogba to his backroom staff and was seen with 37-year-old at the Sunderland game.

Hiddink said:

That those rare kind of former players with this status would be very good for any club to have.

Having left Chelsea back in 2012 after the Champions League victory over Bayern Munich, Drogba returned to Chelsea last season under Mourinho and helped mentor the team on the way to winning his fourth Premier League title.

His former teammates have always spoken positively about Drogba and Thibaut Courtois agreed with his manager’s thoughts on Didier returning to the club.

I had a very good relationship with Drogba last year. He was great for the dressing room and our team. If he comes back as a coach it will be a great addition to all the team.

Drogba will receive a hero’s welcome on his return to west London having scored 164 goals in 381 appearances for the Blues and with strong rumours of a divide in the dressing room this season and the angst caused by Mourinho’s departure, the return of the king can only be good for the club and the fans alike.
