According to reports from Matt Lewis of Get West London, Chelsea have moved closer to completing a deal to purchase Kingsmeadow from AFC Wimbledon.
Wimbledon have clear motives for the sale of their stadium. The report states that the League Two side are aiming to complete a move back to their spiritual home of Merton. Which they’re in the process of trying to secure planning permission for an 11,000-seater stadium in Plough Lane.
The article states that the second round of voting has opened with the first round having 2000 fans turn out to give their opinion. The consensus was 98% of voters approving the sale of the stadium. With the second vote underway, the deal becomes more and more promising.
The Blues are planning to purchase the stadium for several reasons. They would like to have their Women’s team play there. The side is gaining both talent and recognition and deserve the chance to play at a better stadium. Furthermore, they would also have their youth sides play matches there as well.
Overall, the plan makes sense for both sides as Chelsea looks to expand their thinking past the first team. Allowing more fans to attend youth matches will help to further develop their youth. Additionally, the women’s team gaining more acclaim is only positive for Chelsea. Therefore, the deal is a no-brainer for both sides.
