Chelsea made a last-gasp bid on transfer deadline day to sign Benfica captain Luisao, before the signing of Nantes defender Papy Djilobodji for £4m.
According to talkSPORT, Jose Mourinho made a last minute enquiry to Benfica, over the availability of the longest-serving captain in the clubs history.
The Blues were reportedly willing to offer the former Brazil international a two-year contract; a deal Luisao was reportedly interested in.
However, before Chelsea could formerly make contact with the Benfica veteran, the Portuguese giants snubbed out any potential approach, with the 34-year-old now set to see out his career in Portugal.
Chelsea had been and are still being strenuously linked with Everton defender John Stones, after a summer of failed bids from the Londoners.
Speculation over a possible transfer has continued, however, with reports suggesting Mourinho will pursue the young centre-back’s signature again in January.
The Blues did manage to bring two new defenders into the side on deadline day, with the aforementioned Djilobodi arriving at Stamford Bridge from Nantes, whilst Jamaican centre-back Michael Hector has been immediately loaned back to Reading, after completing a £4.5m move from the Berkshire club.
