In today’s pre-match press conference, Jose Mourinho confirmed that Chelsea will be purchasing a new left-back before the end of the transfer window.
Mourinho stated: ‘”We need a left-back, the board know that and my feeling is that we are going to have one.”
As soon as Filipe Luis was sold back to Atletico Madrid after just one season in London, it was evident that fresh blood had to be brought in. The Brazilian didn’t receive the game time he expected last term, as he was often relegated to the bench due to the dominance of Cesar Azpilicueta. Now he’s gone, and Chelsea are without a backup left-back.
There has been a feeling for a while now around Stamford Bridge that a new left-back is most definitely a necessity with the new season fast approaching. The Blues have been linked with a few names, but most strongly Baba Rahman and Alex Telles.
Rahman is a Ghanian international who just turned twenty-one last month. He plays for FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga and is a highly rated youngster who many say is ‘one for the future’.
On the other hand, Alex Telles will be turning twenty-three in December. The Brazilian plays for Turkish giants Galatasaray and came up against Chelsea when the two sides faced in 2014’s Champions League round-of-sixteen.
Both players look to be good additions to the squad, but they’d have to come to grips with the fact that Azpilicueta is Chelsea’s starting left-back for the foreseeable future.
After today, one thing’s for sure: Chelsea will be bringing in a new left-back this summer.
