Speaking in a report by John Percy in the Telegraph, Diego Costa has vowed to not change the style of play that brought him so much success during his first season at Chelsea.
The striker who was once described by Jose Mourinho as a player with a “killer instinct” was never far from the spotlight last season. His aggressive to approach to the game saw him collide with defender after defender. Many pundits called for the striker to cool his style of play after he was banned for his stamps against Liverpool.
Costa said: “I don’t think I have done anything malicious. I’ve not had a red card so why change anything about the way I am,” “If I change in any way, I’m not going to be the same player. It doesn’t matter if defenders want to battle with me or not, I will just be trying to do my job as well as I possibly can.
Costa went on to say: “I’ve always played this way for all the sides I’ve been with and I’ve always scored a lot of goals in this style. The key for me is to score goals and win trophies. “It is the goals that count for me. Fighting hard, giving everything and working hard on the field you have to combine with the goals you score.”
Scoring 20 goals in his debut season in the Premier League was a great achievement for the Brazilian born striker, however he and Mourinho will be hoping for more next season. His ability to maintain his fitness and distance himself from the niggling injuries that tormented him last season will be key for Costa.
“Of course I know that 20 goals is a decent total but I will be trying to improve upon that figure, without a doubt,” said Costa when asked about his goals.
