Jose Mourinho has dismissed any reports that suggest he has been in contract with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, regarding a return to Real Madrid. Sky Sports claimed the Portuguese was a contenders to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who has been tipped to leave the Bernabeu this summer.
Mourinho was believed to be on a shortlist which included: Jurgen Klopp, Julen Lopetegui and Rafa Benitez. Spanish football expert Guillem Balague told Sky Sports: “The idea is that Real now look for another coach – that is what normally happens when Real Madrid do not win.”
Guillem went on to say: “Real have spoken to Julen Lopetegui at Porto, to Jurgen Klopp, to Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho. “They have already spoken to those four to see if they would be interested in coaching Real Madrid. They have spoken to Jose Mourinho – he said no to them, of course.”
However Jose Mourinho has confirmed to Marca that he has not spoken to Madrid about a return. “It is not true [that he sounded me out], the reality is that I called the president to congratulate him on the the title won by the basketball section of the club.” Mourinho added: “I know all too well what this success means for him, for Jose Angel Sanchez and Javi Coll. That is why I was so pleased and I wanted to congratulate him.”
