Nathan Ake is ready to be a part of the Chelsea first team. Last summer, Jose Mourinho was quoted saying, “We are going to have (Andreas) Christensen and (Nathan) Ake, who are 19-years-old and coming from the Academy” Ake played a bit-part role for the Blues this season, making limited appearances, and eventually earning a one-month loan to Reading FC, during which he flourished. However, when Ake has lined up with the Blues, he has looked the part every step of the way.
During the pre-season, Ake played left back for the Blues in a few games. He fit in well, slotting in comfortably in the Blues’ back four. The 20-year-old proved he can deputize that position as well as centre-back. However, Ake looks really good in a central defensive midfield role as well. He performed brilliantly in that area during the game against Maribor earlier in the season. During that match, the Dutchman played a fantastic ball to Eden Hazard, resulting in an assist.
The game v West Brom was no different for Ake. Although he came into a game that was all but decided, Ake looked superb during his time on the pitch. He acted as though he had been lined up next to Matic all season, locking down defensively, while also delivering well placed passes.
Ake impresses me most of all Chelsea’s academy products. Although it is clear that Loftus-Cheek will also be an entertaining player for the Blues, Ake feels the most ready for me. This is because when he plays, he carries himself with sort of a swagger that most youth players don’t have. The Dutchman looks and acts as though he’s been there before, almost as though he has nothing to prove. While this confidence can be interpreted as ignorance, in Ake’s case, it’s one of his best assets. He doesn’t play as if he’s auditioning, he plays as if he’s already won the role. This is imperative to his success on the big stage, and I predict he will have continue to flourish at the highest level.
This season, the Dutchman was able to taste glory with Chelsea, being close to the first team. However, I believe next season will be the year he feels part of the glory. Between him and Loftus Cheek, Mourinho has two great squad players who are ready to be trusted in big games. Just as Kalas was called upon against Liverpool last season, Ake and Loftus Cheek should be expected to perform under pressure. Especially if Chelsea should lose players like Mikel or Luis this offseason. Ake and Loftus Cheek can deputize instead, offering a youthful addition to Mourinho’s current plans.
Utilizing these young talents will also allow Chelsea to keep their hands far away from their pockets this summer. While one or two moves are always expected, the Blues can avoid wholesale changes by promoting from within. Jose can finally be the manager that allows Chelsea to use their academy, rather than always dipping into the transfer market. The Blues have another potential “Class of 92’” amongst their ranks. They just need to be confident enough to use them. If any man can stomach taking that risk, it’s Jose Mourinho. Look for Ake to play a large role in next season’s campaign.
