The news that has filled the all the papers over the past week has been surrounding the future of Raheem Sterling. The England winger confirmed he turned down a £100,000 a week contract at Liverpool. Sterling stressed his sole focus at this moment in time was his football. The news put the top Premier League clubs on red alert, with a small possibility Sterling could become available over the summer as Liverpool may look to cash in.
In a controversial interview with the BBC, Sterling insisted he is not “a money-grabbing 20-year-old“. On the other hand, he did speak of his intention to go on and win trophies during his career. It was at this point that reports say Chelsea come out with: “Stamford Bridge is the obvious place to be.”
Contracts have been the talk of the town on Merseyside after Steven Gerrard revealed he would have signed a new contract extension, had he been offered a contract earlier in the season. To spark more rumours, Jordan Henderson has reportedly also turned down a new contract to remain at Anfield.
After Liverpool’s crushing 4-1 away defeat to Arsenal over the weekend, Brendan Rogers admitted it would be tough to attract quality players to the club with no Champions League football. As well as this, keeping his key players could also prove to be a struggle. A host of clubs are thought to be interested in the services of Liverpool’s English duo. Any deal would help increase the current number of home grown player’s at Chelsea, as well as Manchester City who look set to lose a number of English players over the summer.
In contrast, Jose Mourinho has confirmed earlier in the season that Ruben Loftus Cheek will ‘stay and play’ next season. A move for Henderson could block the development of the young Chelsea prospect.
