It was the news all Chelsea fans have been waiting for, Chelsea have today announced on their official website that John Terry has put pen to paper on a new contract extension. The club captain has been in fantastic form throughout the season in the heart of the Chelsea defence, including a man of the match performance against Tottenham at Wembley. With his current deal expiring at the end of the season, many have wondered whether this could have been the final season for Terry.
Earlier in the season Jose Mourinho confirmed John would be receiving a new deal after he rose to his ‘challenge’ of gaining a new contract. The new deal takes him through till the end of the 2015-2016 season. Speaking to the club’s official website, Terry quoted: ‘I’m delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea. ‘After adding another major trophy to my collection this month I hope myself, the players and manager can continue to bring success to our club. Playing for this great club makes me so proud. And as always I would like to thank the fans who have continually supported me.’
Jose Mourinho also gave his thoughts to the club’s website, this is what he had to say: ‘This new contract is not to say “thank you very much”; it is because John continues to perform. He is a top defender. I am happy that he completely deserves this new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches.’
