The FA has announced the English squads who will feature in the upcoming international break.
Gary Cahill is the only Chelsea player who was called up to the England first team squad. Had John Terry not retired from international football, he surely would have been on the list as well. It is also a bit worrying to see that we’ve had only one player called up. What it tells me is that we don’t have enough English players in our first team, which has become an underlying problem in a powerful Chelsea squad filled with foreigners.
However, when you look at how many Chelsea boys were called upon for England’s various youth squads, hope is restored. The matter of whether these lads will ever break into the Chelsea first team is a debate for another day. Nathaniel Chalobah, on loan at Reading, and Patrick Bamford, on loan at Middlesbrough, were both selected for the U-21 squad.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Joshua Aina, Charlie Colkett, and Izzy Brown were all called up for the U-19s, while Jake Clarke-Salter, Dominic Solanke and Tammy Abraham will feature in the England under eighteens. It’s very pleasurable to see so many Chelsea youngsters representing their country, and I hope they they all impress with the Three Lions during this upcoming international break.
