Roy Hodgson was in the stands at Wembley, watching Chelsea cruise past Tottenham to secure their first piece of silverware during Jose Mourinho’s second stint at the club. The England manager watched Terry put in a man of the match performance and notch himself a goal as the Blue’s saw off their London rivals. Hodgson later shook Terry’s as they were presenting the winners medals.
Terry is still widely regarded as the best English central defender, many have said that England’s fortunes in major competitions could have been completely different with Terry in the squad. Not many could argue that statement either. Whilst playing under Jose Mourinho, Terry has been in the form of his life, despite being 34 years of age.
The English defender is thriving under the challenge of earning himself a new contract. With Chelsea only operating rolling contracts for their ageing players, only those who earn it will get themselves a deal. Terry made a total of 78 appearances for England, scoring 6 goals in the process.
Terry was cleared of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand in 2012 by the Magistrates Court, however was later punished by the FA. The incident led to Terry later retiring from International football. Terry spoke to the Daily Mail after the game, and here are some of his quotes: ‘No, is the simple answer, I don’t want to go into it right now.’ He went on to add: ‘They started playing the national anthem before the game and I was going then. I was ready before the game, I have missed it, playing in these big stadiums, and in these competitions. I’m delighted to get back to Wembley.’
Many have called for Terry to return, many have called for him to stay clear. However, you can only wondered what could have been with Terry in the squad. With the England defence under ever present scrutiny, what better player to hold it all together?
